When the evacuation order hits, you don't have time to think. You grab one bag and go. The question is whether that bag has what you need for 72 hours ... or whether you're about to become someone else's problem at a relief shelter.
The Non-Negotiable 10
- Water filter (LifeStraw or Sawyer Mini)
- 3 days of food (bars + freeze-dried)
- First aid kit (IFAK with tourniquet)
- Flashlight/headlamp + batteries
- Phone charger (portable battery bank)
- Cash ($200 in small bills)
- Copies of IDs and important documents
- Weather-appropriate clothing layer
- Fixed-blade knife or multi-tool
- Fire starter (2 BIC lighters)
Target Weight: Under 25 lbs
If it's heavier than 25 lbs fully loaded, you'll dump gear on the trail. Be ruthless about what makes the cut.
Pro Tips
- Test your bag. Put it on and walk 5 miles.
- One bag per person. Every adult needs their own.
- Rotate seasonally. Swap warm layers, check expiration dates.
- Keep it by the door. A bag behind three boxes of Christmas decorations isn't a go-bag.
Preparation Is Stewardship
"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." ~ 1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)
That's not a gentle suggestion. It's a direct command: provide for your household. A 72-hour bag is the bare minimum.
